Gambling - Commission announce credit card ban

14 Jan
2020

The Gambling Commission have announced this morning a ban on the use of credit cards in all forms of land-based and online gambling. .  This has been on the horizon for some time and was referenced in the Commission’s review of online gambling and the Government’s own review of gaming machines and social responsibility measures in 2019.

The ban will come into effect on 14 April.

The Commission do however acknowledge that National Lottery and society lottery tickets and scratchcards can be bought in supermarkets and newsagents along with other products and will be exempt from this ban. The Commission consider it would be a disproportionate burden on retailers to identify and prevent credit card payments for lottery tickets if they form part of a wider shop.
